In the sweat-soaked, paranoia-fueled fever dream that is Escape from Tarkov, it’s often the smallest piece of junk that brings a PMC’s whole hideout progression screeching to a halt. Enter KEKTAPE, the game’s lovingly bootleg cousin of Flex Tape and the duct tape’s bigger, meaner older brother. It might not be flashy like a LEDX or as sexy as a GPU, but ignoring this waterproof roll of sticky salvation is a rookie mistake. By the time the latest 2026 wipe has players scrambling through Interchange, the savvy ones are already stuffing their backpacks full of the stuff.

Finding KEKTAPE in Interchange

If someone tells a Tarkov player to go to the mall, they usually expect gunfire, Killa’s power-slide, and a healthy dose of regret. But Interchange is also the promised land for KEKTAPE hunters. The hardware store OLI is the only place in Tarkov where KEKTAPE can spawn as proper 'floor loot' — i.e., just sitting there on a shelf, begging to be yoinked.

The shelves in OLI are easily the best spot to look. More than two rolls have been known to spawn in a single raid, which doesn’t sound like a jackpot until a player realizes how much time they’ll save compared to crossing their fingers on every other map. Consistency is king in Tarkov, and OLI delivers.

Finding KEKTAPE in Loot Containers

For players who’d rather not run the gauntlet of Interchange’s endless hallways, wide-open extracts, and the occasional angry scav boss, KEKTAPE can still show up inside plenty of loot containers across all maps. The catch? It’s a bit of a lottery ticket.

Toolboxes and filing cabinet drawers are the two containers most likely to spit out the precious tape. Technical Supply Crates also have a decent shot, but hidden caches are a trap — they’re often jam-packed with ammo and food instead, which is great for the belly but useless for the hideout.

What the Heck Is KEKTAPE Even For?

KEKTAPE is not a 'find it once and forget it' kind of item. It pops up at multiple stages of a player’s hideout grind and can turn into some seriously useful gear.

Here’s a quick cheat sheet:

Use Requirement / Details
Lavatory Level 2 1 KEKTAPE
Water Collector Level 2 1 KEKTAPE
Craft: One KEKTAPE 2 Duct Tape, 2 Insulating Tape, 1 Clin Wiper
Craft: 60-round AK mag 4x 30-round AK mags (KEKTAPE involved)
Lucky Scav Junkbox 3 KEKTAPE, 6 Bolts, 1 Metal Cutting Scissors, 3 Magazine Cases

The Lucky Scav Junkbox is the big brain play here. It gobbles up 196 slots of barter loot while only taking up 16 slots in the stash — essentially a Tarkov black hole for all the bolts, tape, and random garbage that accumulates after every scav run. Whoever thought a cardboard box held together with KEKTAPE could be this valuable deserves a medal.

Tasks and Barters: The Tape That Keeps on Giving

Once the hideout is sorted, KEKTAPE still hasn’t finished messing with a player’s inventory. The task Textile - Part 2 requires five found-in-raid KEKTAPEs, and here’s the kicker: the ones crafted in the Lavatory don’t count. That means no lazy workarounds — a PMC has to get out there and loot the real deal. This task only unlocks at level 40, so it’s a late-wipe headache for dedicated grinders.

On the barter side, Ragman will trade a cowboy hat for a single KEKTAPE at loyalty level three. Is it a fashion statement or a cry for help? Probably both. More importantly, Mechanic at loyalty level three will trade three KEKTAPE and ten Poxeram for a TerraGroup Labs Access Keycard. That little piece of plastic opens the door to one of the most terrifying and lucrative locations in the game, so hoarding KEKTAPE can literally be a ticket into madness.

Final Thoughts

KEKTAPE may look like a joke item, but in Escape from Tarkov it’s a low-key hero. It upgrades the hideout, crafts the best storage container in the game, feeds late-game tasks, and can even snag a Labs keycard. So the next time a player spots that suspiciously shiny roll on an OLI shelf, they should grab it and run like a scav who just found a GPU in a duffel bag. In Tarkov, the tape is never just tape.
